Lenten Series Art
March 2022
The Visual Arts Team (VAT) has invited the congregation to engage in the practice of Visio Divina (Divine Seeing) during the Lenten exhibit. As a member of VAT, I’d like to share my own experience with this type of prayer. I selected Sally Feil’s photograph of a solitary gull perched
on a post surrounded by a vast body of intensely blue water.
I asked myself the questions that VAT has presented to the church.
1 – Does this image speak to my heart?
Answer: Yes! It speaks of silence, solitude and space to reflect.
2 – What questions/emotions arise?
Answer: Are there other gulls nearby? Has the gull chosen this place of solitude or was this simply the last stump left? I imagine peace and
contentment while resting by the calm water. For me this piece of art is a metaphor for time alone with God.
3 – Does the visual presentation relate to the sermons?
Answer: Surprisingly, Yes! When we are busily engaged with others or with tasks and undertakings, we can easily push away the thoughts that may
convict us of being guilty of any of the deadly sins. However, when we choose true silence and solitude with God, the Spirit can gently remind us…..and lead us to seek the opposite virtue.
